Police spokesperson Florian Nath said the victim was being prepared for surgery but his life was not in danger.

The memorial, close to the Brandenburg Gate, has been cordoned off while searches take place.

The site comprises more than 2,700 grey concrete slabs of varying heights and is a well-known visitor attraction in the German capital.

The attack comes two days before a national election in which a far-right party, the AfD, is expected to come second for the first time in nine decades.
